Football is a wonderfully humbling game. Just when you think you have the tactical blueprints figured out, the beautiful game reminds you who is really in charge. This week, we walked away with a modest 50% accuracy rate (1 correct out of 2 predictions), proving that even the best data models occasionally need to eat some humble pie.

Let us start with the good news from the 
Premier League. We saw the writing on the wall in the Manchester 
Derby. With a 55% confidence rating, we predicted 
Manchester City to dismantle 
Manchester United 3-1. The actual 3-0 scoreline reflected exactly the type of one-sided tactical dominance we anticipated. The underlying metrics were spot on.
But then, we took a trip to 
Italy, and 
Serie A completely chewed up our algorithms. In the heavyweight clash between 
Juventus and 
Inter, we predicted a tight, tactical 1-2 away win for Inter (45% confidence). Instead, both teams apparently threw their defensive playbooks out the window, delivering an absolute chaotic 4-3 thriller in favor of Juventus. It seems the tactical rigidity we expected was replaced by pure, unadulterated heavy metal football.
